PBS' New British Crime Thriller ‘Patience’ Will Hold You Over Until 'Dept. Q' Season 2

If you love British dramas, crime mysteries, and non-neurotypical representation, then Patience, a new series from PBS, will be right up your alley. Starring Laura Fraser and Ella Maisy Purvis, the show follows a female detective and a Criminal Records Office employee on the autism spectrum as they team up to solve crimes. And considering how many challenges they have to face, the crime solving of it all is definitely reminding us of Dept. Q on Netflix.
Before you grab your popcorn and start streaming, here's everything you need to know about Patience, now airing on PBS.
Where can I watch Patience?
New episodes of Patience are currently airing every Sunday on PBS. Or, you can stream it on PBS and the PBS app.
Who's in the Patience cast?
Ella Maisy Purvis, 22, is tackling her first lead role as Patience Evans, who values routine and structure in her day-to-day life. And when she has free time, she enjoys caring for her pet lizard, listening to classical music, and solving puzzles. This performance is especially meaningful for Ella, too, since she's on the autism spectrum, just like her character.
"No spoilers, but Patience also has a romantic [storyline]," she teased while speaking with The Hollywood Reporter. "I don't think we've seen that [on-screen] with genuine care and understanding because often, autistic women are infantilized. And Patience is not treated like a child. She's an adult woman with a job. I thought that was really fantastic."
Here's the Patience cast:
- Ella Maisy Purvis as Patience Evans: a woman whose unique perspective helps solve complex cases.
- Laura Fraser as Bea Metcalf: a dedicated detective investigator and mother who notices Patience's unique abilities.
- Nathan Welsh as DS Jake Hunter
- Connor Curren as Billy Thompson
- Adrian Rawlins as Douglas Gilmour
What is Patience about?
Ella Maisy Purvis portrays Patience Evans, who has always viewed the world a bit differently. While working as a researcher/archivist in the Criminal Records Office, she meets Detective Inspector Bea Metcalf, played by Laura Fraser.
It doesn't take long for Bea to realize that Patience is able to draw connections and recognize patterns that other people usually miss. That's why she wants Patience to join her team and help the York Police solve crimes. However, Bea doesn't anticipate the routine shift being "destabilizing" for Patience.
"As Bea learns more about Patience's traumatic upbringing and how autism affects her life, the two women form an unlikely friendship and a formidable partnership," per PBS.
Is Patience based on Astrid?
PBS's latest release is actually an adaptation of Astrid, a French TV drama that debuted in 2019 and has run for five seasons. Now, the fresh take is being produced by Eagle Eye Drama, the same team behind Astrid, as well as Channel 4.
